Linux virtual machine on Windows
1. Linux virtual machine on Windows

Linux (and other operating systems) can be run (on, say, Windows) using
VM (
Virtual Machine) technology.
VMWare is a popular VM technology software system.
VMWare can be freely used for most academic purposes.
2. Windows machine
When you run a virtual machine on Windows, you are running another machine, say Linux, on your Windows machine.
It is best if you have more than 4GB of RAM on your machine.
If not, you may want to only run Windows with most applications (e.g., Office) closed and your virtual machine at the same time in order to complete class work.
Otherwise, you may notice a delay whenever you switch applications.
3. VWWare
The VMWare web site is at
https://www.vmware.com/ .
The full VMWare Workstation (commercial version) allows multiple virtual machines to be run at once.
The VMWare Workstation Player allows only one virtual machine to be run at once.
4. Installation
There are (at least) two steps for installation.
Install VMWare Workstation Player on your machine.
Install your desired operating system (e.g., CentOs 7 Linux) into VMWare Workstation Player.
5. Install VMWare Workstation Player
Download VMWare Workstation Player. This is the free version (for noncommercial personal use) under "Downloads", "Free Product Downloads", "Workstation Player".
The current version is 15 (as of 2019-09-15.)
Install VMWare Workstation for Windows. (If you have a Linux system, then you would not need to do this or class).
To continue with starting VMWare Workstation Player and installation of CentOS 7, see
VMWare: CentOS install .
What follows are some notes generally for VMWare Workstation Player and specifically for a CentOS 7 virtual machine.
6. Settings
Select "Player", "Virtual Machine Settings".
Select "Network Adapter". You may want to connect directly to the local network. Under "Network connection" select "Bridged".
